The Wembley Fire Department is seeking stories from the public ahead of its upcoming 75th anniversary.
The department was founded in October of 1950 after a major fire burned down most of downtown Wembley the month before, according to Fire Department Captain Mike Moon.
With an event to commemorate the 75th anniversary slated for this October, the crew is asking residents and former alumni to share some stories about the local fire department.
“We’re looking for basically any information and pictures and history on the fire department,” said Moon.
“We have some information, news articles and things; we really want to piece it together and understand what were the kind of the milestones and the historic events that happened in the fire department.”
While Moon said all kinds of stories would be welcome - even recent ones - he noted that the fire department is lacking information on what the fire department looked like before 1965.
“Between 1950 and 1965, we don’t have a lot of information on what kind of equipment they were using, what their fire department looked like, what they were kind of responsible for,” he said.
“That’s what we’re trying to understand and just get as much information as we possibly can.”
Moon said the fire department hopes to reach out to former members who may have lost touch with the fire department over the years.
“We had many members that were long standing back in those days,” Moon said.
“Some people served 30 some years with the fire department. We’re just trying to pick their brain and see what they can bring to us.
“Many of our current members likely don’t know any of that history, so it’s awesome to be able to kind of share it with everybody, so they can understand where we came from.”
Moon said submissions will be compiled as a resource that can be accessed on the Wembley Fire Department website.
“Those stories aren't getting shared anymore, and that information is not out there,” he said. “So we really want to be able to put it out there for our members to see and kind of just pay respect to those people that came before us.”
The event to celebrate the fire department’s anniversary is slated for October, potentially around Fire Prevention Week of Oct. 5 to Oct. 11.
“We’re thinking of a gala style event,” Moon said.
“Maybe some entertainment and food and then kind of speakers from over the years, different people that have been in the fire department.”
