It was a full house in Sexsmith were more than 400 people attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Civic Centre.
The ceremony included cadets standing sentry and participating as a colour guard.
“We're here today to remember all veterans,” said Brain Burkhart, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #60 Sexsmith padre.
Among the people to speak at the ceremony was Saedy Squires, who won the Legion’s Intermediate Poetry contest for her poem My Soldier.
Her poem follows the story of a female soldier.
A verse from her poem says,
“My soldier is not the Barbie we once raised to become,
“Nor is she the princess, hiding who she is behind a veil,
“She is the inspiration for young girls all over the world.
“A reminder to them that they too can fight
“That they don't have to heed the ones who try to cover us up.”
Legion member Liz Good-Gerow said the Sexsmith Legion received over 200 submissions in its contest this year, which includes posters, essays, and poems.
Eleanor Parlee also shared her poem I Remember, which won first place for junior poetry.
